MAR MEELIS ZAIA
The first stage of the St Hurmizd Assyrian School was opened on Sunday 20 January 2002 by His Beatitude Mar Meelis Zaia.
Towards the end of his opening speech, His Beatitude said “…a school, in which our people from all denominations will have pride in knowing that they have accomplished their national obligations upon which rely all the coming generations. May the blessings of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ be upon all of you.”
The School commenced its first term of teaching on 30 January 2002 with 86 students.The School’s motto is: Haimanoota, Yartoota and Yulpana which translates into: Faith, Heritage and Education.
Currently St Hurmizd Assyrian Primary School is providing educational services to over 700 students including Religious Studies, Assyrian Language and all NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Key Learning Areas.
His Beatitude’s vision did not stop here. He also envisaged the development of a secondary education institution, and it became a reality with the establishment of St Narsai Assyrian Christian College, along with St Hurmizd Early Learning Centre & Grace Childcare Centre.
Members of our Assyrian community in Australia are proud of these achievements and thankful that future generations of Assyrians living in Australia will have the opportunity to learn about their faith, history, language and culture.
